In consideration of the new and customized powder materials Heraeus will share the latest innovation on additive manufacturing of bulk metallic glass on the conference taking place during 3D Printing USA:
“Additive manufacturing of bulk metallic glasses”
Since its development in the 1980s, 3D-Printing or Additive Manufacturing has emerged as a powerful tool to process diverse classes of materials including polymers, ceramics and metals. In particular, Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Electron-beam Melting (EBM) have been proven as promising, future-oriented processing techniques for the industrial production of complex-shaped metallic parts. Most commonly, EBM and SLM are performed with conventional crystalline metallic alloys. Recently it has been demonstrated that the processing conditions inherent to (EBM and) SLM also allow processing of a new class of metallic materials with a unique spectrum of properties, i.e. bulk metallic glasses also known as amorphous metals. This talk gives an overview of recent developments and future perspectives in this direction including requirements, challenges and advantages that emerge in dealing with this promising class of materials.
