What does AMLOY mean?

AMLOY is the acronym for Amorhpous Alloy Technologies, which is a new founded strategic business unit within the Heraeus group. We develop alloys, technologies and manufacturing processes focused on the industrial application of amorphous metals. We are the worldwide leading provider of these AMLOY alloys which are based on Zirconium and Copper. These metallic glasses are suitable for an exceptional number of high-tech applications. They are energy-absorbing and scratch-proof while still having very good spring characteristics which are needed for applications such as elastic elements, gears, gear parts or drive shafts produced by different processes as casting and rolling, additive manufacturing and injection molding.

What is the special feature of injection molding with Heraeus AMLOY?

AMLOY is optimized for injection molding. Therefore, the Austrian machine manufacturer ENGEL has developed a hydraulic injection molding machine specifically for the processing of AMLOY, which varies primarily on the injection side from a conventional injection molding machine for polymer processing. A special focus was on the even heating of the AMLOYpre-material. Depending on size and geometry of the parts one or more ready to use parts can be produced within only 60 to 120 seconds in a single work step and without manual post-processing.

With its minor shrinkage of <0.5% AMLOY offers near-net shape production of amorphous components at low average costs. Hence it offers a wide range of opportunities: This makes injection molding of amorphous metals superior in comparison to conventional metal injection molding as MIM and metal processing, such as the time-consuming CNC, which generates plenty of waste.

What are your expectations for the Hannover Messe?

In cooperation with our partner ENGEL we will present the newly redesigned AMM-injection molding machine. The AMLOY alloy and the fully automated production process, which begins with the melting process and goes through the dynamically regulated injection process, leads to about 70 percent reduced cycle time compared to existing solutions. The needed heating capacity is reduced by 40 to 60 percent. This clearly scales up the cost efficiency of injection molding of amorphous metals. The redesigned injection molding machine scores high injection rates of 1.000 mm/s. Utilizing the higher material strength of AMLOY makes it possible to realize very thin wall components.

We will demonstrate the optimized injection molding process live on the tradeshow several times a day.
