It's all a question of pore size

What do pores have to do with battery performance? Quite a bit, because porous carbons are used in many applications – and the size of the pores is decisive.

Porocarb® is an industrially manufactured conductive carbon powder that is particularly porous. A very small quantity of Porocarb® is all it takes to significantly improve the performance of lithiumion batteries used in smartphones and substantially cut production costs.

Porocarb® – this is the name of a completely new product family of fine-pore conductive carbon powders, which Heraeus is launching onto the market with a focus on electrochemical applications (e.g. as an additive in batteries).

The innovative carbon particles, with pores between 10 and 1000 nanometers in size, were developed over the course of a project lasting more than three years. With this innovative powder, Heraeus closes the pore size gap between graphite felt with pores of a few micrometers and mesoporous carbons with pores smaller than 50 nanometers.

This opens up new application areas. Thanks to its special pore size distribution, Porocarb® is the first porous carbon material that can be used in liquid electrochemical storage systems, e.g. as a performance increasing additive in contemporary lithium batteries or as a porous, surface-active carrier material for fuel cell catalysts.

Through a patented process, Heraeus can adapt the porosity distribution of the Porocarb® particles in accordance with customer-specific requirements, adapting it precisely to the respective application.

Porocarb® takes us another significant step closer to the decentralized generation and efficient storage of electrical energy.
