Presenter: Andreas Langner, Head of R&D Team Specialty Fiber Optics

Dr. Andreas Langner is Head of the R&D Team Specialty Fiber Optics at Heraeus Conamic, Germany. He has a background in Physics and started his career in specialty fiber optics in 2005 as the project leader of several funded projects for the development of a rare earth doped bulk silica for laser fibers, for which he was awarded with the first prize of the Heraeus Innovation Award in 2013.

Topic: Influence of light-sources on UV fiber damage measured with DIN 58145

The DIN-standard 58145 “Measuring method for determination of solarization effect of fused silica optical fibers” was introduced over 5 years ago to normalize the quality control for UV fibers. We observed that two measurement systems, both assembled by the DIN standards recommendations, showed significant deviations in solarization effects at 214 nm (E’ center) and 266 nm (NBOH center). Changes of spectral light power density between 190 – 260 nm wavelength in respect to fiber coupling conditions, influence of lens aging and N2 purging were investigated and an improved system for solarization measurements on UV fibers is recommended.

Topic: Fused silica step-index fibers tailored for applications from UV to IR wavelength range

Large core step index multimode fibers having an un-doped fused silica core and fluorine doped silica cladding, are common in industrial high-power laser, minimal invasive medical and spectroscopic applications. Most important factors influencing the fiber performance are the utilized fused silica core material, refractive index step between core and cladding as well as thickness of the cladding and fiber cross section design. We will present deeper insights in the optical properties of different fused silica materials and new material developments for blue and green lasers to give a guideline to choose the best fiber type depending on the application wavelengths.
