CES 2023: Heraeus Epurio and AI Silk reveal ultra-light Haptic Metaverse Glove made with conductive fibers, rendering bulky remotes obsolete

Las Vegas, 5-8 January 2023. Heraeus Epurio, the world leader in conductive polymer material innovations, and  AI Silk , a Japanese wearable-tech startup that has developed the proprietary and patented conductive fiber LEAD SKIN®, unveil the Haptic Metaverse Glove with no mechanical parts attached, that doubles as sensors and an AR/VR/XR controller. Made from AI Silk’s proprietary conductive fiber, LEAD SKIN®, Haptic Metaverse Glove powered by LEAD SKIN® features built-in finger-bending sensors, as well as control buttons on the back of the wearer’s hand, all of which are also made of the same conductive fiber. Providing wearers tactile feedback when they “touch” metaverse objects, the ultra-lightweight glove enables users to enjoy a truly immersive metaverse experience without having to hold a bulky remote control.

Our Haptic Metaverse Glove powered by LEAD SKIN® is a game-changer for metaverse exploration because it enables players to move around and manipulate AR objects freely and intuitively, just as you would in the physical world,” said AI Silk CEO Hideo Okano. “What makes this possible is LEAD SKIN®, our proprietary and patented conductive fiber that has potential for a wide range of uses beyond AR games. We are very excited to launch our new product and introduce this innovative technology at CES 2023.”

Clevios™ is the pioneer and leader in PEDOT chemistry. The aqueous conductive polymer dispersions can be coated on textile fibers to turn them into high performance sensing and stimulation electrodes. “Our Clevios™ products are a great match for smart textile applications, as they not only provide low resistive textile electrodes, but also provide the wearer with unparalleled comfort. The coatings are thin, soft, and flexible, which allow maintaining the original soft feel of the textile. We are proud to showcase the Haptic Metaverse Glove powered by LEAD SKIN® together with AI Silk at CES 2023”, said Heraeus Epurio’s Dr. Armin Sautter.

In addition to CES 2023, AI Silk will also exhibit the product at ShowStoppers® on 5 January.

Where to catch the exhibit & demonstration:

• Jan. 5-8 – CES 2023 (OE-A Pavilion, Venetian Expo A-C, Booth #51239; Japan Pavilion, Eureka Park, Hall G, Booth #62201 )

• Jan. 5 (6-10 p.m.) – ShowStoppers (Bellagio Hotel, Grand Ballroom)

‘Haptic Metaverse Globe powered by LEAD SKIN®’:

A tactile metaverse glove doubling as a controller with built-in finger bending sensors. Weighing only 380g, the ultralight glove is also more cost-effective compared to conventional products. “LEAD SKIN®” enables the sensors to measure the current impedance from the expansion/contraction of the fabric. We used deep machine learning to build an algorithm that understands the intended actions from glove wearers’ physical finger movements (sensor data). This enables wearers to manipulate metaverse objects as intended, making their metaverse experiences feel all the more “real.” The glove can also transmit electrical pulses via fabric to provide haptic responses to touches on the palm and fingers.

(*This development is based on result obtain from a project subsidized by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, NEDO).

LEAD SKIN®, our patented synthetic conductive fiber, has the following characteristics: 1) high and homogenous electrical conductivity that makes it feel comfortable on the skin; 2) safe, clean, and durable; 3) antibacterial and antiviral. LEAD SKIN® is produced using an aqueous solution without producing any toxic gas. Our proprietary technology used to process the fabric turns all the wastewater into freshwater, ensuring sustainable manufacturing that meets our ESG standards.

About AI Silk:

AI SILK is a Tohoku University spinoff that develops various wearable products using their proprietary and patented technology to produce smooth conductive fiber, turning them into electrodes. The company has developed wearable sensors that can measure vitals (heartbeat, etc.). The company released electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) apparel products in 2020, using its mass production technology for coating conductive polymers on synthetic fibers and non-woven fabrics.
