COPAL® - Special bone cements and moulds for revision surgery

Periprosthetic joint infections are a serious complication in arthroplasty and present a considerable therapeutic challenge. The COPAL® product range meets the stringent requirements of revision surgery and infection management:

COPAL® bone cements provide broad–spectrum, highly effective combinations of antibiotics aimed at combating the spectrum of clinically relevant pathogens associated with revision surgery.

COPAL® knee moulds allow a quick and easy preparation of implant-like spacers for two-stage revision procedures in knee.

COPAL gentamicin clindamycin

  • Broad, highly-effective spectrum of activity against around 90 % of clinically-relevant pathogens, including anaerobes through the addition of 1g gentamicin and 1g clindamycin
  • Efficient effective concentration in situ due to initially high local antibiotic release
  • Significantly reducing surgical site infections (SSIs) in high risk primary arthroplasty patients
  • Reduction of resistance through the use of two antibiotics
  • Reproducible antibiotic release due to homogenous mixture
  • For permanent anchoring of prosthetic implants
COPAL gentamicin vancomycin

  • Broad spectrum of activity due the addition of 0.5g gentamicin and 2g vancomycin
  • Effective inter alia against vancomycin-sensitive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE)
  • For permanent anchoring of prosthetic implants
  • Suitable for temporary spacers
COPAL spacem

COPAL® spacem*

  • Cement with reduced particle abrasion for a reduced risk of reinfection
  • Contains calcium carbonate with anti-inflammatory and hydrophilic properties
  • Suitable for the fabrication of customised articulating spacers for individual patients

COPAL® knee moulds*

  • Reproducible high quality spacer design due to the shape stability of the COPAL® knee moulds
  • For the preparation of implant-like spacers with an articulating surface
  • Spacers can be individually adapted to the patient’s bone situation due to the three different mould sizes, height-adjustable tibial components and optional stem
  • Quick and easy handling

In revision arthroplasty the use of supportive products are associated with an improvement to the long-term surgical outcome. Today, ’state-of-the-art’ not only refers to the choice of suitable bone cement with appropriate viscosity and composition, but also to:

  • Vacuum mixing systems that produce homogeneous, standardised mixtures such as PALAMIX®
