Urban areas in particular will develop microgrids based on standardized systems and integrated design, allowing for a decrease in overall energy transport costs. Big data e-solutions will help to make energy smart for every application.

  • Storage is required to bridge renewable energy fluctuations from seconds to months

  • Smart grids require flexible and durable storage solutions

The grid of tomorrow will have to offer more storage capacity, flexibility and a more dynamic reaction time. For trading energy, an optimized and efficient energy storage infrastructure with flexible storage capacity on a short and long-term basis is called for. City districts will form urban microgrids and electric vehicles amount to a massive storage cloud with immediately available energy.

To utilize this storage potential, batteries are required to live through a significantly higher number of charging & discharging cycles.

In 2020, 2.5 Million private cars are expected to be registered in Shanghai alone. If each car was to have a 40KWh battery, Shanghai cars would provide a 100gigawatt storage cloud.

This enormous potential of stored energy can only be utilized if batteries can live through a significantly higher number of charging & discharging cycles than is currently the case.
