Heraeus Photovoltaics, the worldwide leading supplier of metallization solutions to the PV industry, today announced the opening of an advanced research and development facility in Shanghai. The new APAC Technology Development Center (APAC TDC), is the second largest R&D facility of Heraeus Photovoltaics worldwide. The new center will encourage collaboration with strategic partners, provide customers with access to a broad portfolio of technical services and further reduce lead times for product modifications and deliveries.
With China and the APAC regions being the main growth areas for the PV industry, Heraeus sees it as a logical next step to strengthen further its local R&D footprint. “We have established this center in China to increase broader collaboration with all potential partners along the PV value chain”, states Dr. Weiming Zhang, Senior Vice President Innovation, Heraeus Photovoltaics. Dr. Zhang added that the new facility’s enhanced technical capabilities will enable customers to accelerate their innovation and speed-to-market. “The PV business is no longer a marathon, it’s a sprint that demands lightning-fast response,” he said. “For instance, our Product Modification Lab will reduce sample lead-time down to one week. Shorter response times will enable our customers to react and respond quickly to marketplace opportunities.”
The new Heraeus APAC TDC provides a comprehensive portfolio of technical services, ranging from services related to quality control, application services for metallization pastes to diffusion consultancy services. Customers, material suppliers and equipment manufacturers can work closely with Heraeus technical experts for a joint optimization of metallization processes and cell efficiencies.
According to Huimin Xie, Head of Application Engineering, Heraeus Photovoltaics, the technology center is set-up to become the main center of excellence for solar cell metallization not only in Asia but for the PV-industry as a whole. “The center features a worldwide unparalleled combination of collaboration and technical services in the field of solar cell metallization solutions”, according to Mr. Xie. “It is also another proof point of Heraeus’ strong commitment to the China market, completing our existing network of Asian Product Modification Labs located in Taiwan and Japan.”
