Continuing evolution in mobile and stationary energy applications require advanced energy storage systems with innovative concepts and material solutions. Advanced battery designs and electrochemistries have been developed specifically with the target to:
- increase energy density and
- improve durability
- all while maintaining or increasing the (power) performance
While existing technologies can be optimized based on new components and materials, the new and next generation chemistries and cell designs are being continuously introduced into the market and gaining market share.
A consequence of the optimization to increase energy and power in all electrochemical systems will be limitations in ionic and electronic transport. There is a simultaneous need for fast and efficient ionic transport (kinetics) and electron transfer which requires smart engineering and advanced material solutions.
