Safe use of ultraviolet (UV) light

With appropriate training and adequate personal protective equipment (PPE), ultraviolet radiation is a safe and reliable method for disinfection of surfaces, air and water, and drying and curing of inks, coatings and adhesives. Ultraviolet radiation is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between X-rays and visible light and is invisible to the human eye. Without proper PPE, UV radiation can damage skin and eyes, and can, in the long-term, cause skin aging and potentially lead to skin cancer and cataracts. It is important to follow some rules to ensure the safe use of UV equipment:

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (safety glasses, UV-blocking face shield, gloves)
  • Cover exposed skin (don’t forget the area around the neck!)
  • Ensure others in the work area also have on proper PPE or ensure the work area is vacated prior to use
  • Test exposed materials for UV- stability


  • Don’t look into the radiation without safety glasses
  • Don’t expose humans, animals and plants to UV radiation
  • Don’t touch UV emitters and radiated surfaces. Risk of burns!
  • Do not make any modifications to the equipment as the safety is then no longer guaranteed.

Ultraviolet Radiation

This equipment is classified into risk group 3 (high risk) in accordance with EN 62471 (Photobiological safety of Lamps and Lamp Systems). UV radiation causes damage to eyes and skin. Avoid exposure of eyes and skin.

  • Wear personal protective equipment.
  • Cover unshielded areas at arms, legs and neck.
  • Do not look into the radiation.
  • Mark the working area with appropriate warning signs.
  • Protect the working area from unauthorised access.

Hot Surface

Lamps, enclosures and surfaces under radiation can become very hot during operation. Contact with the hot surface will cause burns.

  • Do not touch hot surfaces.
  • Allow the equipment to cool down (approx. 10 minutes).
  • Wear protective gloves.

Dangerous Voltage

Risk of electrical shock when working on live components. Danger to life.

  • De-energise the equipment.
  • Secure against restarting.
  • Check that the equipment is de-energised.
