Beyond Breakthroughs: A New Lens on Innovation

Innovation used to be synonymous with breakthrough products and cutting‑edge technology. Today, it goes beyond technology, it is about using the power of science to solve real problems, create long-term value, and respond to global challenges. Heraeus, with its deep roots in materials science and global reach, is at the forefront of this transformation, helping industries innovate with purpose.

Historically, innovation was seen as the domain of cutting-edge technology, breakthrough products, or fast-moving startups. But today’s world is volatile, uncertain and complex. We face overlapping crises that require us to rethink our approach. True innovation must now be guided by long‑term value, empathy and collaboration. It must answer deeper questions: Why are we doing this? Whose lives will it improve? How will it help society and the planet?

The evolution of innovation: from invention to intention

Before the 20th century, innovation meant invention - driven by mechanization, electrification, and the rise of mass production. This era laid the groundwork for modern industry.

Wilhelm Carl Heraeus became the first in Germany to smelt platinum on an industrial scale in 1856, laying the foundation of industrial chemistry, electrical engineering and innovations that would shape entire industries for generations.

Throughout much of the 20th century, innovation became synonymous with technological progress. It was measured in patents, prototypes, and scientific achievements that powered computing, telecommunications, and global connectivity.

In 1969, Heraeus quartz glass made it to the moon as part of the Apollo 11 laser reflector, helping measure the Earth-Moon distance and it still works to this date. By 1991, Heraeus had produced Germany’s first telecom fibres, enabling the digital infrastructure we rely on today.

By the 2010s, innovation shifted toward user-centred design. The focus moved from how technology could improve efficiency to how it could serve people - emphasizing personalization, digital experiences, and interconnected services.

Heraeus played a key role in enhancing the performance and reliability of electronics. We helped make everyday devices faster, lighter, and more responsive, enabling the seamless digital experiences that define modern life.

  • 72% of global executives say their innovation efforts are now focused on sustainability and social impact (McKinsey, 2024).

  • Human-centered design ranks among the top three innovation strategies adopted by leading companies worldwide.

  • The World Economic Forum reports that companies with strong ESG-aligned innovation outperform peers in long-term resilience and stakeholder trust.

Innovation has officially shifted from invention-driven to intention-driven. This also reflects a broader transformation: from a linear process to a dynamic, inclusive journey -one that values empathy as much as efficiency, and collaboration as much as competition.

Why Heraeus is uniquely positioned for the future of innovation

As a long-standing family-owned technology company, innovation is part of our DNA. With a global footprint spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas, Heraeus is uniquely positioned to observe how societies and customers’ needs evolve through time, across regions and industries

This perspective allows us to recognize emerging patterns, respond to diverse market needs, and contribute meaningfully to the transformation of innovation – especially in the field of materials science, the building block of progress across industries.

Understanding the evolution of innovation helps us appreciate how far we have come – from harnessing steam engines to harnessing data and empathy. But history is only half the story. In our next article, we examine the forces shaping today’s complex environment and why purpose‑driven innovation must lead to tangible action. We’ll explore four global forces and share how Heraeus and other innovators can respond.
