CIR Optimizes the Performance of High Speed Printing

The Alito Color Group of Leyton, London, retrofitted Heraeus carbon infrared (CIR) emitters in place of a short wave near infrared (NIR) print drying system. Now they are able to realise the full potential of its high speed print heads, by increasing sheet feed speeds to match the print speeds with no detriment to print quality. In addition the new emitters use less power than the previous system and offer a significant increase in operating life. This improved energy efficiency impacts far less on the environment.

Carbon Infrared Improves Drying of Specialty Papers

Hybrid Carbon Infrared Heaters Optimize the Drying of Paper Tissues

Paper serviettes are popular because they have good absorbency and can be attractively printed. However, during printing, these very properties cause particular problems, as both the ink on the surface and that fraction within the deeper serviette layers must be dried. Only when the ink and water are completely dried can the serviettes be packed. In order to achieve this in-line and in an acceptable time, the drying must be especially efficient.

Infrared Helps Improve Quality and Productivity of Flexographic printing

The emitters have also proved to have an extensive, reliable and consistent working life, which has provided further operating cost savings.

  • A printing operation needed a fast, efficient means of drying paper. Their previous method -- offset printing with drying by more than 1000 halogen lamps -- was too expensive. They switched to flexo printing with a modular drying system from Heraeus Noblelight. The Heraeus system reduced the number of lamps needed by nearly 90%. Production speed increased, control increased, and costs fell dramatically.
  • A laboratory operation uses microscope slides and biopsy cassettes. These require labeling prior to being archived. Traditionally, this has been done using relatively unreliable methods such as sticky-notes and handwriting. A manufacturer of non-contact inkjet printers developed a way to label these critical items. Heraeus infrared technology is used to dry the inks quickly and evenly.
  • A manufacturer of personalized printed communications uses Heraeus infrared technology to dry inks after printing on a six-color printer. Line speed increased 50% due to high power density at the right wavelength.
  • The manufacturer of digital inkjet printing equipment for business and industrial applications sought a means to speed the printing process, in hopes of facilitating truly in-demand printing. The current process used hot air to dry ink/toner onto paper, causing a bottleneck in process time. The company approached Heraeus Noblelight for a faster, more efficient drying method. Heraeus application engineers provided a system that uses Heraeus's proven carbon twin-tube heater. The lamp provided even drying across the paper surfaces, and did so in reduced time.
  • A user of high-speed printing presses employing flexography required a fast, thorough, efficient and cost-effective method of drying the water-based inks during the process. The company worked closely with the application experts at Heraeus Noblelight and found that carbon infrared lamp technology is an excellent solution for applications that use water and paper. Carbon infrared lamps provide the heat, and ambient room air carries the remaining vapor away from the paper. No hot air is required for the system.
  • A specialty print operation uses inkjet printers for high-speed quick-turnaround print projects for its clients. Prior to stacking and folding, the ink must be dried completely to prevent blurring and other degradation of the printed matter. A custom infrared system from Heraeus Noblelight uses specific IR lamps matched to the needs of the print system.
