Artificial intelligence, cloud applications and streaming services are driving rapid growth in the volume of data transmitted worldwide. To process information in fractions of a second, increasingly high-performance connections between data centers are needed.
This is exactly where Heraeus Covantics’ Hollow Core Fiber technology comes into play. Unlike conventional optical fibers, light is guided through an air-filled hollow core. As a result, data reaches its destination faster and transmission delays are reduced. This is particularly important when large volumes of data must be processed in real time—for example, in AI applications or in modern data centers.
The technology is in particularly high demand where every millisecond counts. Together with Microsoft, Heraeus is working to bring Hollow Core Fiber into mass production, thereby laying the foundation for the next generation of digital networking.

We encounter bacteria, viruses and fungi every day—on clothing, surfaces, or in air and water filtration systems. Many conventional antimicrobial solutions lose their effectiveness over time or release substances that are increasingly coming under regulatory scrutiny.
With AGXX, Heraeus Precious Metals has developed a technology that takes a different approach. It uses oxygen and moisture from the environment to permanently reduce germs on surfaces. This ensures that the protective effect lasts for a long time without the need for continuous release of active ingredients.
The potential applications are diverse: from hospital and workwear to sports textiles and air and water filters. AGXX can not only inhibit the growth of microorganisms but also reduce odors and extend the useful life of materials. In this way, the technology combines health protection, sustainability and practical benefits for numerous applications in everyday life and industry.

Heraeus Precious Metals (HPM) has realigned its organizational structure and, effective July 1, 2026, established two independent operating companies: HPM for the industrial business and Argor-Heraeus, which focuses on the luxury and investment market segments. With this new structure, the business unit is responding to the increasing differentiation of markets and customer requirements.
Robin Kolvenbach will take over as President of Argor-Heraeus. Responsibility for HPM will initially be assumed on an interim basis while the position is being filled. Both operating companies will remain part of the HPM business division and report to Steffen Metzger, who holds overall strategic responsibility. The realignment is intended to enable a stronger focus on the respective markets and support the further development of both businesses.
Heraeus has signed an agreement to sell its rare-earth magnet recycling business, Remloy (HRM), to the Canadian company Mkango Resources. Heraeus has published its 2025 Financial Report. In it, the company provides an overview of a fiscal year that was marked worldwide by geopolitical conflicts, economic uncertainty, and a challenging market environment. Many industries faced intense competitive pressure, investment was more cautious and key sales markets showed mixed performance.
Despite these conditions, Heraeus increased revenue excluding precious metals to €2,830 million, representing a 4.4% increase over the previous year. Profit after taxes amounted to €259 million. However, the result was significantly influenced by one-time items. These included, for example, changes in provisions related to irregularities in the recycling process identified in the prior year. The weaker operating performance, various impairments of equity investments and fixed assets and significantly higher borrowing costs for precious metals had a negative impact.

Mixed Results Across the Four Business Areas
The four business areas performed differently.
Heraeus is addressing these challenges with a clear focus on innovation, operational excellence and the strategic development of its portfolio.

Dr. Nikolas Pojezny, President of Heraeus Covantics, spent a day working on the production floor. Here, he shares what he learned about the company, its products and its people during that time.

One early morning in late May, I started my day on the morning shift at our specialty fiber production facility in Kleinostheim. It quickly became clear to me: If you want to understand what’s being produced here, you have to experience it for yourself—not just talk about it.
Right from the start, I was able to assist with measurement techniques and inspect preforms. What looks like a straightforward process at first glance quickly becomes quite challenging. Even the smallest deviations make all the difference. And much of it can only be recognized with experience and a keen eye.

What really stuck with me was the work in glass technology. I helped build a hollow-core preform. Everything is assembled and aligned by hand, very precisely, step by step. You quickly realize that this has little to do with “simple technology.” It’s truly meticulous work that requires patience and experience. And that’s exactly how technologies are developed that are later used worldwide—often invisible, but crucial.
I was also impressed by the product quality. Despite thousands of shipments per year, complaints are the absolute exception.

Throughout the day, there were repeated situations in which a sense of responsibility became very tangible. When handling high-quality components or starting up equipment, you quickly realize that it’s not just about procedures, but also about intuition and experience. The conversations were just as important to me—open, direct and grounded in reality. We discussed current issues, but also looked ahead, from investments to new technologies.

In the end, there’s one thing above all that I’ll take away with me: a deep respect for the high standards of work here. At the same time, I’ve come to realize that behind every preform, every fiber and every piece of equipment are people who have mastered their craft and work with great dedication. Many thanks to all my colleagues on site for your openness, your patience, and the ease with which you welcomed me into your daily work routine. It is precisely these impressions that will stay with me.

Record turnout at “Jugend forscht” with 47 projects—over 450 visitors at the Career Day.
There was a lot of curiosity, excitement and a sense of optimism in the air—all in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Last Saturday, Heraeus welcomed several hundred guests to Hanau: young researchers, families and interested visitors.
This “Super Saturday” at Heraeus featured two events centered on young people.

“Jugend forscht”: 80 young researchers present their projects
The “Jugend forscht” Rhine-Main East regional competition kicked off early in the morning—supported for the 16th time by Heraeus as the sponsoring company.
A record number of 80 young researchers competed with 47 projects in the categories “Jugend forscht” (27 projects) and “Jugend forscht junior” (20 projects). At the awards ceremony, six “Jugend forscht” projects and seven “Jugend forscht junior” projects were awarded first place, making them regional winners. These participants will now move on to the Hessian state competitions in March in Darmstadt and Kassel.
We spent the day with Miriam Höner from Heraeus Covantics, one of the judges for “Jugend forscht”:

From snail slime glue to generating electricity from plastic waste
The topics of the award-winning projects ranged from homemade robots, brainwave-controlled computer games, generating electricity from plastic waste, new learning concepts for computer science, warning systems for diabetics, climate-friendly cooling systems, and biodegradable snail slime adhesives to new rocket engines for supersonic aircraft.
It was striking that 13 out of 47 projects alone focused on climate and environmental protection as well as energy issues; the topic of health was also strongly represented with seven projects. And one in five projects centered its research on the trending topic of artificial intelligence.

Jugend forscht: Being Creative Without Rigid Structures
Frank Stietz, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of the Heraeus Group, was delighted by the exchange with the young researchers—and their fresh perspectives. “They think freely, creatively, and without rigid structures or existing business models in mind. It is precisely this openness that can provide valuable inspiration—for new applications, alternative solutions, or even for how we ourselves think about innovation,” said Frank Stietz during the awards ceremony.

Training Day: The Training Team, Trainees, and Dual-Track Students Take Center Stage
Afterward, many young researchers took the opportunity to explore the Training Day event. Right from the start in the early afternoon, the training departments were already getting quite crowded in some areas. The entire training team, along with 67 apprentices and dual-track students, showcased the business and IT training programs, the metal and electrical workshops, and the chemistry training program—while colleagues from Kleinostheim presented the glass manufacturing process.

“I think we had just the right mix,” says Dorothea Wörner, Head of Business and IT Training at Heraeus. “Our visitors were able to get first-hand information by talking with our apprentices and dual-track students, but we also presented our professions in a fun, hands-on way.”
For example, our guests were able to conduct chemistry experiments, navigate their way through the required departments of the business training program using puzzle games and in the metal and electrical workshop, small souvenirs were cast and handed out.

Guests from schools and “Heraeus” families on site
The Training Team welcomed a total of more than 450 visitors. “We had sent informational materials to 50 schools in the area beforehand and we’re delighted that so many colleagues also came to take a look around with their children,” reports Susanne Sauer, a specialist on the Heraeus Training Team.

Right up until the end—in the early evening—there was a lot of activity in the training departments and as a result, Claudia Piechnik, Head of Training at Heraeus, gave a very positive assessment of the Training Day. “We’re thrilled with the fantastic response! A big thank you goes out to the entire team and, above all, to our apprentices and dual-track students, who presented our training programs at Heraeus with such passion.”

Heraeus has honored 45 graduates for successfully completing their vocational training or dual study programs. The young professionals come from nine operating companies and service platforms and have successfully completed their training in various fields.
Training its own skilled workforce is a key component in ensuring future staffing needs are met and retaining knowledge within the company over the long term. Many of the graduates are now taking on positions of responsibility within the Heraeus Group. The graduation ceremony in Hanau honored not only the personal achievements of the young professionals but also the dedication of the trainers and teams who supported them along the way.
Through its ongoing investment in vocational training and dual study programs, Heraeus is strengthening its pool of skilled professionals and laying the groundwork for the company’s future development.

On September 19, 2026, Heraeus will open its doors at the Heraeusstraße site in Hanau from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Under the theme “We Are Heraeus”, we’ll celebrate together with you, as well as employees from all over Germany and their families. Several thousand guests can look forward to a varied program featuring stages, performers, attractions, activities for children, a wide range of food options and a few surprises.
To help pass the time until then, we’d like to take a look behind the scenes with you. In our “Behind the Scenes Video”, we’ll introduce you to the team that makes this celebration possible.
