Our customers benefit greatly from vast experience Heraeus has in manufacturing catalyst gauze systems and offering related services. Years of close monitoring of gauze performances and the elements which adversely influence either the catalytic activity or mechanical stability of the gauzes has resulted in modern, efficient systems which guarantee an excellent performance of the gauzes.

Heraeus Nitro Technologies not only supplies catalyst gauzes but also advises customers on the best catalyst configuration, alloy and structure. Using computerised programs, optimized catalyst systems can also be proposed to suit individual process parameters. Our commitment to ongoing technical support for the optimization of the individual catalytic systems means we become partners.

In addition, Heraeus offers N2O abatement systems with high efficiency and a low pressure drop on a lease basis. We can also take care of the refining of the spent gauze.

Thermocouple wires of Pt and alloyed PtRh are used for measuring temperatures where aggressive conditions and/or high measuring temperatures (> 1200 °C) makes the use of non-precious metal thermocouple wires impossible.

Heraeus offer an extensive range of options for the calibration of thermocouple wires. Each delivery is dispatched with a calibration record, but if required, we can also supply detailed calibration reports for specific °C ranges or fixed points. All measurements are carried out in accordance with recognised standards

  • Partnership reflects Heraeus commitment to expand its leadership position in precious metals suppliers and life cycle services

Continuing a partnership that was first forged in 1988, Heraeus Precious Metals, the world’s leader in precious metals lifecycle services, joined executives from Northam Platinum to celebrate the opening of Northam’s new state-of-the-art smelter at the group’s Zondereinde mine in the province of Limpopo.

The new smelter, which significantly expands Northam’s capabilities at Zondereinde, is part of a twenty-year extension agreement the two companies signed in 2015. The new furnace incorporates a number of advances in the area of PGM smelting. These include extended refractory lining life expectancy, metal containment and cooling, along with best practice in terms of monitoring, tapping and furnace control functions.

Under the terms of the agreement, Heraeus invested an additional €20 million to Northam’s smelter expansion project and would continue to refine Northam’s PGM concentrates and purchase up to 40% of Northam’s refined precious metals. The joint agreement provides Northam with expanded refining capacity and long-term, predictable sales through a guaranteed distribution channel. For Heraeus, the extended cooperation with Northam enables the company to provide their worldwide customers with a secure and dependable access to Platinum for the next 20 years.

The partnership with Northam helps solidify Heraeus Precious Metals as the world’s leading provider of industrial precious metals services across the entire precious metals lifecycle. With refining and recycling capacities in the US, Europe, South-Africa, India and China, the company covers the entire precious metals loop, including sourcing, trading, risk management, logistics, recycling and processing for critical industries, including catalysts, bonding wires, pharmaceuticals and others.

Commenting on the operation of Northam’s new smelter, Heraeus Precious Metals President André Christl said, “We believe that to compete and succeed, it comes down to a simple formula: investment and innovation.” But according to Christl, while the company has embarked on significant capital expansion efforts, including a state-of-the-art precious metals factory in Nanjing, China and becoming majority owner of Argor Heraeus in Switzerland in 2017, success cannot be achieved in isolation. He added, “As Heraeus Precious Metals grows, we want to partner with and invest in companies that share that same ambition. Northam Platinum has demonstrated that for the past thirty years, and we’re delighted this agreement puts our partnership on the path to a 50-year golden anniversary in 2038.”

Accompanied the construction of the PV plant from A to Z: Lebona Moholoopa.

For Lebona Moholoopa and his colleagues at HZA, saving electricity is very important. They have energy-saving initiatives on site and think very carefully about their consumption. And now they are going one step further. “The time had come to think about alternative energy sources,” Moholoopa explains.

“We constantly strive to further improve our energy management. To do so, we rely on energy-efficient processes that are economical and environmentally friendly.” Still, the site’s annual energy consumption totals around 3,200 megawatt hours—about as much as 800 single-family households. Another goal has been to reduce the site’s dependence on local energy suppliers, since prices have been steadily rising over the last decade. At the end of 2016, a plan took shape to install a photovoltaic (PV) plant at the site.

Lebona Moholoopa was appointed the project manager—with support from Dr. Friedhelm Averdunk, managing director of HZA, and Nico Mostert, a control systems specialist, along with many other committed colleagues at the site. The project got off to a rapid start, with plans to complete it within five weeks. “It was a really stressful time,” says Moholoopa, “but I had great colleagues working with me. Their support was priceless.”

At 10 am on May 22, 2017, the system was turned on. Lebona Moholoopa and everyone else who worked on the project will certainly remember that moment. Moholoopa looks back: “This was the most demanding project of my career to date. At the same time, it was worth all the effort. I’m very proud of how it went. We demonstrated our environmental awareness and commitment to sustainability.”
