Every year during Advent, Leipzig hosts a large Christmas market in the city center between the market, the old city hall and Augustusplatz. The market is adorned by a large lighted and decorated Christmas tree. Among other things, the Christmas market features a historical market with mead and hand bread and a Finnish village with lots of souvenirs from Finland, Finnish glögg and freshly prepared flambé salmon. A Ferris wheel and a fairytale forest will be set up on Augustusplatz. Directly on the market place in front of the old town hall you will find a lot of Christmas decorated stalls, where you can buy a lot of delicacies such as bratwurst, kale and crackers, langos, waffles, chocolate fruit, nuts, Kräppelchen, children's punch, Feuerzangenbowle and mulled wine. But there will also be sold many products from the region: Gingerbread from Pulsnitz, Stollen from Dresden, Erzgebirge wood art (smoking men, candle arches and pyramids) and Leipziger Lerchen (small shortbread cakes with cherry filling and marzipan). Traditionally, every year there is a special Christmas market cup each for mulled wine and children's punch. For children, a ride on the historic carousel is a highlight.
In addition to the Christmas market in the city center, Leipzig Central Station is also a small highlight. In addition to the train traffic, there is a shopping mile there with lots of stores decorated for Christmas during Advent. Small stalls with mulled wine and other delicacies are also set up. Each district in Leipzig also hosts its own small Christmas market on at least one weekend in Advent.
During the Christmas days, it becomes quieter in the city and many spend Christmas with their families. Traditionally, Christmas Eve is spent eating potato salad with Wiener sausages. On Christmas holidays there is roast duck or goose with Thuringian dumplings and red cabbage.
